Remembering Fredric Brandt: The Pioneering Dermatologist Dies at 65 - Vogue.com

Fredric Brandt, the pioneering cosmetic dermatologist who transformed the field of anti-aging over the course of his more than 30-year career, died yesterday at the age of 65. With a high-profile clientele that included Madonna, Stephanie Seymour, and a black book’s worth of Hollywood insiders, Brandt may arguably have been the world’s most well-known celebrity skin doctor. A larger-than-life personality with an irrepressible enthusiasm for the business of beauty, he possessed a wizardry with cosmetic injectables that was unmatched. Among the first to use Botox as a means to rejuvenate the face, he helped turn the line-freezing substance into a verb before going on to develop countless FDA-approved protocols for volumizing fillers, topical forms of botulinum toxins, and skin-tightening lasers. In recent years, Brandt, who traveled between his practices in Coral Gables and New York City, distilled his knowledge of ingredients into a best-selling skin-care line with witty names like “Needles No More” and “Dark Circles Away,” inspired by his in-office procedures.

Despite his jam-packed schedule and commitment to cutting edge research, Brandt was always full of warmth and humor: Those who knew him will remember that he was quick to laugh, loved music, and often sang show tunes around the office. Outside the crisp white walls of his Midtown practice, he was an avid art collector whose New York apartment was filled with works that ranged from Anish Kapoor to John Baldessari. He cared greatly about his beloved rescue dogs and, as a self-described health fanatic, started most mornings with yoga. Perhaps Brandt’s most memorable characteristic, however, was his profound kindness. He will be deeply missed.
