How Does Menopause Affect Your Skin?

sueSay menopause and it sends a shiver down most women’s spine. But the Big M needn’t be feared. Instead of freaking yourself out over all that hype, just arm yourself with the right information and make an easy transition into another fulfilling phase of your life.

Get in the know with what your skin can experience when you hit menopause. Be informed!

Adult acne: Some women experience adult acne with menopause. This is because as estrogen levels decrease, the testosterone produced in the women’s body is no longer hidden. The increased testosterone levels stimulate the sebaceous glands making sebum thicker and making the skin oily and acne prone.

Wrinkles and sagging skin: Decrease in estrogen levels results in the loss of supportive fat beneath the chin, face, hands and neck. Fat tends to get redistributed and concentrated over the abdomen and buttocks. This drop in estrogen levels also affects collagen and elastin production which helps in keeping the skin firm and supple and aid its repair mechanism. This leads to condition called Elastosis where the skin’s resiliency towards wrinkles and repair is affected.

Dry skin: Menopause also leads to skin thinning because of the slowdown of blood flow to the dermal capillaries. This means less nutrients and oxygen is delivered to the skin leading to less cell turn over, increased trans- epidermal water loss and very dry flaky skin.

Hyper pigmentation and age spots: Menopausal women are more at risk of sun damage since the melanocytes are controlled by estrogen.  Lower estrogen levels in the body mean less melanocytes, which in turn means less melanin. Hence extra sun hours affect menopausal women significantly leading to age spots and hyper pigmentation.

Diet and lifestyle changes can make a huge impact on your menopausal years. Get a grip on your menopausal years with:

  • Start low impact aerobic exercises or start playing a sport to increase your heart rate, pump more oxygen and improve blood circulation.
  • Get your dose of Vitamin D from the early hours of the sun.
  • Have a balanced diet of dark leafy veggies, dairy, cheese, sardines, salmon and legumes.
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water and incorporate fresh fruit and vegetable juices in your diet.
  • Start using a prescription Vitamin A cream to help build collagen. Retinoid creams also give very good results. Speak to your dermatologist and get a cream to suit your skin.
  • Use a gentle skin refining product regularly to stimulate the deeper layers of the skin to make your skin more active.
  • Explore alternative options like HRT, BOTOX and lasers for collagen building.
  • Stop smoking and reduce your caffeine intake.
  • Regulate alcohol consumption and preferably stick to spirits like red wine, but in moderation.

Making the right skincare and lifestyle shift to deal with your menopause will ease your concerns.

5 Gluten Free Grains For You

gluten free grainsSeptember is celebrated as Whole Grains Month!

We all love grains. After all, be it your breakfast cereal, your pasta or your bread or your favorite dessert…all seem to have some or the other whole grain component to it. But with the rising number of gluten intolerant people due to celiac disease, going gluten free is not an option anymore- its a must. Research shows that 1 out of 133 people in the United States suffer from Celiac disease. But as we all say, We love our grains!

Here are five gluten free grains which you can enjoy:

Millet: It is the world’s 6th most important grain and has been consumed since as early as 8300 BC! It can be used to make flat breads, brew your gluten free beer, make a pilaf or pop it like popcorn. Try it in baking recipes and even make cookies with it. Try the sticky millet patty or croquette. All you need is:

  • 1 cup millet
  • 2 ½ cup water

Boil the millet in the water for about 15 minutes and then let it stand for another 10. Add your favorite finely diced veggies, season with salt and then shape in croquettes and bake in a hot oven.

Sorghum: Sorghum is an ancient cereal grain and is excellent for the celiac diet. These grains are antioxidant rich and contain policosanols, a cholesterol lowering compound which benefits heart health. Sorghum can easily substitute for wheat in a number of baked recipes. Try this neutral tasting grain to make cookies, muffins, breads, pizzas, flat breads pies and even noodles! Just look online and you will be amazed to see the storm you can cook up with these.

Amaranth: Amaranth is actually a herb whose seeds can be used like a cereal grain. It has very high iron content and also contains magnesium, calcium, fiber and almost 13 grams of protein. The peptide, lunasin, present in Amaranth, is said to have cancer preventive capabilities. Try this grain sprinkled on salads, stirred into soups or even add to your cake or cookie mix. Amaranth polenta with porchini mushrooms makes an excellent accompaniment with roasted or braised chicken. Yum!

Buckwheat: Buckwheat is an amazing pseudo cereal and contains high levels of zinc, manganese and copper. Buckwheat groats helps you stay fit and healthy because of its high nutritional and soluble fiber content. Try Korean buckwheat soba noodles or buckwheat flat ribbon pasta in your celiac diet. For an easy buckwheat galette (savory crepes) recipe you will need:

  • 2 cups buckwheat flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 750ml water
  • 1 egg

Mix the salt and water in a large bowl. Then add water 1/3rd at a time stirring well. Add the egg or egg substitute once all the water has been added.  Cover and refrigerate the batter for about an hour. Voila! Your gluten free galette mix is ready for use. Bake and enjoy them with a sweet preserve topping or make your own savory filling!

Wild Rice: Give your mundane rice dish a nutritional twist by adding  wild rice. Wild rice is a nutritional powerhouse rich in fiber, folate, magnesium, zinc, Vitamin B6, manganese and niacin. It takes a little longer to cook but expands to almost 3 times its original size.  Go exotic and try a wild rice crusted salmon fillet or try a chicken and wild rice quesadilla.

The 10 Golden Rules Of Skincare

yourskineveryday1While America spends an alarmingly steep amount of money on skin and beauty products, many of the most effective ways to keep your skin glowing, even toned, and wrinkle-free don’t require that you break the bank.  Indeed, it’s fairly simple to maintain lovely composure just by following these ten simple guidelines.

Target your skin type: Your skin may be elastic, but when it comes to products, you should never adopt a policy of “one size fits all.” If you don’t know already, determine whether you have a dry, oily, or mixed skin type and tailor your entire regimen accordingly.

Don’t smoke: Unless you live with your head in the sand, you know that smoking is terrible for you.  It’s a surefire way to develop any number of cancers, of courseâ€"but it will also take a terrible toll on your skin, bringing on bags under your eyes, psoriasis, and premature wrinkles.

Exfoliate: Exfoliating, or cleansing away the excess layer of dead skin cells from your body, is essential to looking healthy.  While the avenues can range from a simple sea salt cleanse to high-end scrubs, the overall benefits are the same:  glowing skin, fewer wrinkles, and promotion of even color.  Additionally, exfoliating will allow your moisturizing products to penetrate more deeply.

Moisturize daily: While you only need to exfoliate several times per week, moisturizing should be something you do every day.  Some people think that having an oily skin type means you should skip this part of skin care, but this is simply not true.  No matter what your pH balance, your skin craves topical moistureâ€"just be sure that you’re using facial lotions and hydrating body lotions that meet your needs.

Hydrate: Providing your body with an adequate water supply is something that needs to happen on the inside as well as the outside.  To keep your skin looking radiant, you need to flush out the many toxins that build up in your body, and to do this, you should drink at least 2 liters of water per day.  During hot weather or when you’re working out, drink even more.

Cleanse gently: Of course your makeup remover should be potent enough to get the job done, but harsh cleansers may end up drying out your skin.  Especially if you have sensitive skin, go for water-based rather than alcohol cleansers to clean out those pores.

Sun protection: It’s a misconception that we should wear sunscreen only on long days at the beach.  Routine walking, or even driving, can lead to more exposure to UV rays than we realize, so make sure to apply adequate SPF protection even for moderate stints outside.  If you do plan on a beach or pool outing, re-apply from time to time (or check to see the water resistance of your products).

skineveryday3Adequate sleep: They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing.  Just as exfoliating removes unwanted dead skin cells, a full night’s sleep makes sure you grow new ones.  On the other hand, getting too much sleep can be just as bad.  The guideline is to try to sleep according to a regular schedule, so if your cycles are in need of some maintenance, consider melatonin or another natural regulatory aid.

Don’t treat all skin areas the same: Not all skin composition is alike, so pay special attention to especially sensitive regions such as the skin around your eyes and lips. The skin around your eyes is particularly prone to damage and much thinner than the rest of your face, so be sure to use more delicate products when cleansing in this domain.

Use hypoallergenic makeup: Even if you aren’t prone to food or pollen-based allergic reactions, your skin may still be affected by subtle allergic reactions.  To stay away from such risks, seek out makeup that’s hypoallergenic and in tune with your skin type.

Of course, some skin types and conditions may demand special treatments and products, but for the most part, having healthy skin is as simple as it is inexpensive.
